Abyei, January 5, 2026
Hon.Yohana Akol Ngor, the Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sport, and representative of the Chief Administrator of the Abyei Area Administration, graced the elections of the Abyei Youth Union, which commenced on Saturday, January 3, 2026. In attendance at this esteemed occasion were the Hon. Biong Mathok Aguek, Minister of Education, and the Hon.Dier Nyok Pajol, Deputy Mayor of the Abyei City Municipality. Furthermore, a distinguished delegation from the National Youth Union was led by Mr. Motwakil Wol Amour, Deputy Chairman of the South Sudan National Youth Union.
The gathering also hosted community leaders, civil society representatives, and advocates from organizations supporting youth initiatives in the area, especially UNISFA.
The voting process transpired over two consecutive days, with candidates vying for three key positions: Chairperson, Speaker (IEC), and Assistant. A total of 120 ballots were cast via ballot boxes, with voters’ ages spanning from 18 to 35 years. Notably, all voters participated, and no significant absentees were recorded.
Six candidates contended for the Chairmanship, two for the position of Speaker (IEC), and two others aspired to the role of Assistant. Upon the conclusion of the vote tally, Mr. Chan Mijak Dau was elected Chairperson, Mr. James Ajak Aguer secured the position of Speaker (IEC), and Ms. Nyandeng Langar achieved the role of Assistant.
At the event’s conclusion, Hon. Yohana Akol Ngor, extended his heartfelt congratulations to the victors, particularly the Union, on their remarkable accomplishment. He also expressed gratitude to the outgoing Youth Union leadership for their unwavering efforts in fostering conducive conditions for an efficient transition to the new administration, commended the Elections Committee for their commitment, and acknowledged all attendees, particularly the National Youth Union delegation, for their perseverance in attending the Abyei Youth Union electoral processes amidst challenges.
