Abyei Special Administrative Area

The government of Abyei Special Administrative Area welcomes the visiting High Level European Union delegation, discuss the general situation in Abyei. =========================

Abyei – Tuesday, 8th October, 2024, the government of Abyei Special Administrative Area, led by the Acting Chief Administrator and Deputy Hon. Deng Arop Mading, received at the General Secretariat in Abyei, the high level delegation from the European Union headed by Amb. Timo Olkkonen. The delegation also included Cocard Sebastien Marie, Scalorbi Massimo, Okks Othmar. The High level delegation was accompanied by Hon. Pia Phillip Michael, Undersecretary, Ministry of Peace Building, Republic of South Sudan.

In a brief note extended to the press after the meeting, the government of Abyei Special Administrative Area’ meeting with the visiting High level European delegation discussed and highlighted numerous challenges facing Abyei Area and ways to address these challenges.

During the meeting, the government of Abyei Special Administrative Area appealed to the European delegation to;

1. Exert pressure on the Republic of Sudan and South Sudan, to resolve the final status of the Abyei Area; through addressing grassroots peace within and with the neighbors by building on existing modalities.

2. Support the call of upgrading UNISFA into a full UN Mission with a Civilian Head of Mission to address political, development, Peace and Security as well as humanitarian.

3. Support good governance and rule of law; through training and equipping law enforcement agencies (Community Police Committee).

4. Support of the local economy (Agriculture, livestock, trade and livelihoods).

5. Assist organizations working in the field of Trauma Healing to deal with traumatized children affected by the conflict between Ngok Dinka and Twic.

6. Support rehabilitation of infrastructures ( schools, hospitals and town power station, roads and feeder roads) to enhance service delivery as well as operationalization of Malual Aleu (Athony airstrip).

— In conclusion, the visiting High level Delegation pledged to forward these appeals to the relevant authority.

The delegation are expected to engage traditional Chiefs before embarking on the visit to facilities of public service in the Area. _______________________________________

The meeting was attended by Hon. Makuei Angok, Acting Speaker of Abyei Legislative Council, Ministers, Commissioner for Relief and Rehabilitation Commission and the Secretary General of the government of Abyei Special Administrative Area. _________________________________
